This past week marked the one-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd. Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin when Chauvin put his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes. Chauvin was found guilty of murder in the death of Floyd.
On Friday, Senate Republicans, urged on by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, put a knee on truth and decency in America when they used the filibuster to kill a bipartisan effort to investigate the January 6th Capitol insurrection, one of the worst things to happen in our country. These are the same Republicans who gave a standing ovation for Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman after the attack and who claim to be pro law and order. By their actions, however, they sent a clear message that they do not back the Blue! Only six Republicans voted for the bipartisan commission while the majority of Republicans stood in opposition, using the excuse that such a commission would be partisan!
It’s clear Republicans don’t want the truth of January 6th to come out. If, as they claim, it was really just a bunch of “normal tourists” at the Capitol that day, then the commission would prove their claim. So far, though, the Justice Department has charged 400 of their so-called “tourists” in connection with the insurrection.
Five people died as a result of the insurrection on January 6th, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. Yet these Republicans, who held no less than 33 hearings on Benghazi, stood against this one investigation into the insurrection.
Investigating an insurrection should not be a partisan or disputed matter! Remember the 9/11 commission? What happened at the Capitol on January 6th was a terrorist act with the intent of overthrowing our government. Without a commission and without the truth, our democracy is in grave danger!
On this Memorial Day weekend as we honor all the brave men and women who died serving our country, the Republican Senators who voted against a January 6th commission and who then attend a Memorial Day event should be called out for what they are–total hypocrites! These Republican cowards wouldn’t even defend our democracy!
The voters did their part in 2020, placing the Democrats in power in the White House and Senate, sending a clear message that the majority of Americans want the truth and want our democracy defended. Democrats now need to stand up and do their part…end the filibuster and with it, end a major part of the darkness we need to rid ourselves of in this country once and for all!

But it was her private life that proved to be her real crucible. Repeatedly aligning herself with damaged men, she found herself once again emotionally and physically abused. And then in a life-long custody wrangle with her ex-husband over her beloved son. But she knew she had to break the pattern. So she started with herself.
