Hour 1 – Barb Adams and John J. Higgins, Dark Day in America
The presidential inauguration is only 11 days off, and in the aftermath of the insurrection that ensued on Wednesday, if social media is to be believed, the domestic terrorists who call themselves “patriots” are busy planning their next target…Inauguration Day.
Wednesday’s violence should never have happened if truth be told, but that’s been the problem all along. Trump and his enablers have never told the truth about the election results. From his own inauguration forward, Trump’s lies have steered his followers down a path of no return—one which was inevitable and played out on Wednesday.
To witness the President of the United States incite a mob of supporters to riot and invade one of the most sacred symbols of this country’s democracy was egregious beyond words, but then to have Trump feign condemnation of their actions after telling them “We Love You!” and “You’re Very Special!” was gut wrenching.
For four years we knew how this would end, but for Republication leadership and legislators to begin finally speaking out now when the obvious is beyond obvious only adds insult to injury. Decent, law-abiding Americans and this country have endured this madman and his enablers’ psychological, cultural, societal, and legal injuries far too long. And when one adds in the death toll from a pandemic denied by this president and his followers plus the all-too-real bloodshed from this latest of his “stunts” to save his own ego, it becomes unbearable.
There is no decency or conscience with the far-right extremists, even as blood has been shed in the Capitol. They march in lockstep as they continue to radicalize their flock to do even greater harm and, thus far, no one is stopping the mad king and his henchmen, including the security failure of the Capitol police on Wednesday.
Thousands of pro-Trump loyalists in MAGA hats and shirts, waving Trump and confederate flags, not American flags, simply walked up the Hill and broke into the building and desecrated it. How could this have happened? The police and federal authorities had plenty of advance warning. Trump has been lying since the election that it was stolen from him and he and his far-right mouthpieces have been repeatedly encouraging his followers to do whatever it takes to place him back on the throne he believes is his and his alone.
Yet when push came to shove, it was the rioters who did the pushing and shoving as the police were easily overwhelmed and brushed aside, allowing the mob to penetrate both the House and Senate chambers, forcing many lawmakers to fend for themselves as best they could from the angry crowd. The rioters were basically unchallenged all afternoon at the Capitol, and if one participant’s statement is to be believed, he claimed he was told by a Capitol police officer where Chuck Schumer’s office was! Where was the National Guard or the FBI? We’ve now learned that the U.S. Capitol Police Chief turned down National Guard troops days before the “protests,” including inexplicably rejecting additional manpower from the FBI even as extremists were climbing the Hill. The police chief will be stepping down next week.
But what about the officers whose selfies were taken with rioters during the takeover and what about the obvious double standard when the crowd is white, not Black? Do we now have to police the police? And what does this portend for the upcoming presidential inauguration?
Trump must be removed…NOW! He has spent four years undermining truth and facts and the media that reports them. He has been aided and abetted by a Republican Party whose leaders have been terrified of the political consequences of crossing him and who abdicated their leadership. We must not allow this madness to continue! We must speak truth to power! Trump and his loyalists must be made an example of and held accountable if we are to have any hopes of keeping our Republic and democracy intact.
We the People have spoken and those we have put in power to represent and protect us need to act and respond appropriately. Are you going to invoke the 25th Amendment and/or impeach Trump and additionally disqualify him from ever holding Federal office again? If not, why not? To those who have sworn to protect and serve this nation and its laws, are you going to work together to ensure security going forward? If not, why not? If your answer is no to these questions, here’s one more, are you willing to live with the consequences of your inaction leading to the downfall of our Republic?
Wednesday, January 6, was a dark day in America as nearly 4,000 Covid-19 deaths were recorded in the U.S. while a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol. The events of this past week have given us a glimpse of one possible future. Sadly, neither of these had to happen had truth been spoken all along. Will we finally allow the truth to set us free?
