The effects are not benign, with the “us vs. them” spilling over into all walks of life.
According to a recent article by Ken Goldstein entitled 12 Reasons Why We Vilify, “Vilification emerges with the full erosion of our shared values.” Considering our inabilities to agree on so many issues such as a woman’s right to choose, gun control, gay marriage, health care, climate change, tax and political reform, and so on, one must question if we still have enough shared values to hold this nation together.
