Hour 2 – Barb Adams and John J. Higgins, Reality and Reckoning (Part 2)
This week, as Gallup reports President Biden’s approval rating among independents holding strong at 61%, giving him a good foundation to build on, the foundation of the GOP continues to crumble.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde routine brings new meaning to incoherency and insanity as he tries to appease both establishment conservative and MAGA/QAnon members of the House.
Republicans are caught in a trap of their own making, simultaneously fearful of their own voters while being totally bewildered as to their party’s fate. Voting 199 to 11 in a public ballot, Republicans chose to keep fearmongering, assassination supporting, coup backing, anti-Semitic, school-shooting denying Marjorie Taylor Greene in her committee positions, while that same caucus voted 145-61 in an earlier secret ballot to keep truth-telling, anti-conspiracy, impeachment supporting Liz Cheney as conference chair!
While all this appears crazy (and it is), the disparate results reflect the underlying fear running rampant within the GOP. The Republican caucus is fearful of their own voters and the handful of them who voted against Greene are fearful of being defined by Greene’s crazy claims, so instead of choosing between establishment Cheney and reality and psycho Greene and blind loyalty to Trump, they decided to split the baby.
These cowards are driving the Republican Party over the edge and will do whatever it takes to keep their political power no matter the consequences. And for now, conservative Republicans must maintain silence in the face of violent agitation.
But even as Republicans continue to split into opposing factions, Democrats were able to coalesce this week. The Senate passed the budget resolution with Vice President Harris serving as tiebreaker on Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid relief package and the House voted to removed Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee appointments.
Hope is returning…signs are all around. Lou Dobbs Tonight, Fox’s highest-rated show, was cancelled this week and Fox called out South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace on air for her comments questioning AOC’s insurrection trauma. More than 140 constitutional lawyers and scholars spanning the political spectrum are pushing back against Trump’s impeachment lawyers, stating the First Amendment claims Trump’s lawyers are making are “legally frivolous” and do not prevent the Senate from convicting Trump. GOP Representatives Gohmert and Clyde were fined this week for bypassing the House metal detectors, costing each of them $5K, and indictments began in the January 6th Capitol insurrection. President Biden boldly stated on Friday that he doesn’t believe former president Trump should be getting intelligence briefings due to Trump’s “erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection.” And a Black woman, Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, will be the world’s top trade official for the first time!
In summation, although it seems like we’re living in two different realities and could easily split off into two different countries, we need to remember and reflect on the question I pose each and every week…”What will it take to rid ourselves of this darkness once and for all?” The answer lies in the courage to choose wisely and focus on the hope, light and love that unites us and is right before us here, now.
