Hour 1 – Barb Adams and John J. Higgins, The Inauguration
As Trump’s final days as president wind down, we find ourselves facing a nation in turmoil, our Capitol a fortress because of threats from far-right extremists surrounding the Inauguration and the grim news that the reserve of Covid-19 vaccine doses Trump’s administration pledged to reserve was just another lie told by this president and his enablers.
Throughout all of this, Trump has been MIA at the White House, doing what he has done for the past 4 years of his presidency, shirking his duties as commander-in-chief while spending his time seeking validation and solace from anyone who will still listen to him, like Steve Bannon and Mr. Pillow’s Mike Lindell.
Trump’s narcissism and utter incompetence coupled with his complete lack of contrition for the insurrection he incited are finally catching up to him, though. After four years of being idolized by those who literally stood by him throughout countless allegations of sexual assault, endless lies, an impeachment, and a pandemic he refused to acknowledge and wage war against, Trump’s political capital is crashing and burning. A new Pew Research Poll released yesterday shows that Trump’s overall approval rating has fallen to 29%, the lowest it has ebbed during his entire presidency. Additionally, 68% of Americans say they don’t want to see him be a major political player in the future.
After a failed presidency and failed coup attempt, Trump will have more than just his supporters’ devotion to be concerned about, though. His mass radicalization of supporters through his “Stop the Steal” hoax and conspiracy-theory mongering has taken on a life of its own, and many are no longer happy with their creator, who they felt betrayed them when he turned on them by calling for a peaceful transition.
Word on far-right message boards was quick to condemn Trump, and a growing segment of his once-devout followers are now denouncing him, some even going so far as to label him a “coward” and “traitor” and calling for his “arrest” or “execution.”
As Trump exits the White House a private citizen, his reckoning begins. He’ll be facing debt in the hundreds of millions of dollars and likely criminal prosecution from which he’ll no longer be immune. And then there’s the second impeachment. If the Senate does its job as it should and convicts Trump, Trump then faces the real possibility he will be disqualified from ever running for any Federal office again.
The signs of Trump’s demise are all around, including actual signs that are visible from Trump’s windows in the White House as workers continue to put up bunting with Biden’s and Harris’s names on them for the Inauguration.
While there is hope returning with the change in leadership, we must recognize that we, too, will have to reckon with the illusions that divided this nation and deal with those systems and institutions that perpetuate injustice and hatred. This is our collective quest, our calling…to find the courage to root out that which does not serve the greater good and heal the breach, for we cannot rest until justice flows and Truth, Light, and Love re-unite us.
