November 7, 2015 – Archives/Pod Casts Hour 1 – Hour 2 – Hour 3
Hour 1: OPEN DISCUSSION on Election Results 2015.
One year away from the 2016 general election, voters this past Tuesday sent some definite signals to both presidential candidates as well as to those trying to predict things to come.
The Tea Party scored a surprise victory in Kentucky’s governor race and Republicans were able to keep control of the state senate in Virginia. Democrats (and campaign finance supporters) scored well on a number of important ballot issues. In Seattle and Maine campaign finance reform issues passed resoundingly. Seattle’s “Honest Elections Referendum,” which seeks to limit the influence of money in politics, won handily.
While Ohio defeated the push to legalize pot, Coloradans voted to allow their state to keep $66 million in marijuana taxes instead of having to return those monies to taxpayers.
In Washington state, voters approved the push to save endangered animals (this one’s for you Cecil the Lion!), while in Texas, voters approved the NRA-backed Proposition 6, which gives residents the constitutional right “to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife.”
And on the “human side” of things, Houston rejected an LGBT rights ordinance as voters in San Francisco gave a decisive victory to Airbnb.
JOIN Barb and John as they discuss Election Results 2015 and what, if any, significance they might hold for the country and the presidential election next year.
