Country Over Party: The government is not functioning properly. We’re now living in a country where the federal government (i.e., the party in control) decides whether you’re exonerated from criminal wrongdoing or sent off in handcuffs based on which party you belong to–putting loyalty to party over loyalty to country. We have a president who cannot be indicted and the head of the Department of Justice investigating the investigators who investigated the president. In addition, a growing number of Republican lawmakers, including Senator Lindsey Graham, are urging Donald Trump Jr. to ignore a subpoena, and Attorney General William Barr is unlikely to arrest him if he does. It’s time to end the divisiveness that is tearing America apart…it’s time for Country Over Party.
Is There a War on Women?: Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the state’s controversial near-total abortion ban Wednesday evening. The new law is the most restrictive anti-abortion measure passed in the United States since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. The legislation (House Bill 314, “Human Life Protection Act”) bans all abortions in Alabama except when “abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk” to the woman. It criminalizes the procedure, reclassifying abortion as a Class A felony, punishable by up to 99 years in prison. Attempted abortions will be reclassified as a Class C penalty. Worse yet, this legislation makes no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. Missouri on Friday also passed a restrictive anti-abortion law which would ban abortions at eight weeks. Sadly, women’s bodies have become pawns in a political struggle. Maybe someday, women will have the same rights as guns.
