Hour 1: OPEN DISCUSSION on The Enemy Within
Abraham Lincoln said “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
We live in a time of corporate rule, when corporations are allowed to behave as “individuals” (Citizens United) yet are not accountable to our laws. Corporate power is behind the politics of polarization, Wall Street bailouts, union busting, and media consolidation. Policies advocated by their lobbyists are destroying the middle class and bankrupting the country, all while the top one percent live like kings – immune to criminal prosecution for crimes against the people. They’ve apparently become “too big to jail.”
Our economy is based on a rigged stock market, and we’re mandated to have all types of insurance (auto, home, health), which are controlled and overseen by…the insurance industry!
We’re told employment is on the rise and jobs are plentiful. They are, if you’re part of the rapidly growing service industry. When did America shift from being a manufacturing to service economy? And how are ordinary citizens supposed to make it and keep up with rising costs of food, healthcare, and everyday living? Credit!
Most Americans don’t realize how indebted they’ve become. Add up all the mortgage debt, credit card and student loan debts, and Americans are more than 11 trillion dollars in debt and climbing. We may not be slaves in legal terms, but we all owe someone something and are obliged to pay, or pay the consequences.
The disparity in America continues to grow. While ordinary citizens are being asked to shoulder more debt, the super rich and multinational corporations are not paying their fair share. Once a government “Of the People, By the People, For the People,” America is being controlled by those who seek to turn it into “Of the One Percent, By the One Percent, For the One Percent.”
