Hour 2: Dr. Mark Thornton
Dr. Mark Thornton, an American economist and Senior Fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute, rejoins Amerika Now during the second hour to discuss how prohibition caused the “greatness of Gatsby.”
The current adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is playing in movie theaters across the country. While some may contend that the film is an indictment against capitalism, Mark Thornton believes it is “an implicit condemnation of government prohibition.”
Mark believes “there is an important difference between wealth and luxury (in the modern sense) and the type of riotous over-the-top behavior on display in such films like The Great Gatsby.”
Mark wrote his dissertation on the economics of prohibition, and understands the value of The Great Gatsby, which displays decadence not merely as titillation for the viewer, but as an object lesson in the evils of prohibition. The entire plot is tied to the prohibition of alcohol, which was accomplished by the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, and many aspects of the plot are driven by the black market that developed in the 1920s.
As Mark points out, “In the world of the black market, property rights were protected with machine guns rather than justice. And the stigma against young women drinking in bars at night was displaced by the allure of an exciting night out on the town drinking and listening to jazz. Instead of these profits going to competing entrepreneurs, the money was going into the pockets of thugs and wannabes. Social order was replaced by chaos. This cultural decay was the ironic fruit of the puritanically-motivated prohibition movement.”
Mark will relate prohibition and The Great Gatsby to what’s happening in America currently.
Dr. Mark Thornton is Senior Fellow at the Ludwig von Mises Institute. He serves as the Book Review Editor of the Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics. He served as the editor of the Austrian Economics Newsletter and as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Libertarian Studies. He has served as a member of the graduate faculties of Auburn University and Columbus State University. He has also taught economics at Auburn University at Montgomery and Trinity University in Texas. Mark served as Assistant Superintendent of Banking and economic adviser to Governor Fob James of Alabama (1997-1999) and he was awarded the University Research Award at Columbus State University in 2002. Hour 3: Michael Wood
World-famous cryptographer, Biblical researcher and author Michael Wood (Pauline Paradoxes Decoded) joins Amerika Now during the final hour of the show to discuss a newly unlocked Bible code which he says will end the debate on homosexual marriage.
True or false?

For the past ten years, Michael has been using his cryptanalytic skills to help scholars more accurately decode the first-century meanings of words and symbols in order to better understand how those words were used by the New Testament authors.
His groundbreaking discoveries are proving that many of the actual messages contained in the New Testament — especially its central message — are shockingly different from what has been previously thought, and he’s earned the attention of top Biblical scholars.
“Even the best Bible scholars can only translate based on what they’ve been told the ancient words mean,” says Wood. “Cryptanalysis of the early material is showing scholars that they’ve been using the incorrect meanings of many Biblical words, and leading experts who have reviewed the research are now concurring.”
Wood says the New Testament authors originally wrote that salvation solely depends on treating others with kindness and benevolence, and that salvation by brotherly love applies equally to all — regardless of race, religion and even sexual orientation.
Through Michael Wood’s cryptanalytic revelations, scholars around the world are finding the New Testament to be a very different book indeed.
During his teen years as a preacher’s kid, Michael won many denominational awards for memorizing entire books of the Bible word for word. As a young adult, he achieved international acclaim for creating the unbreakable code REDOC-II. Later in life, he began to combine his two passions of cryptography and the Bible, making groundbreaking discoveries which are changing the minds of today’s leading Biblical scholars.
Michael’s cryptanalytic and religious worlds collided when he began to study the Dead Sea Scrolls.
