(1) OPEN DISCUSSION on The Presidential Nominating Process
Beginning in February, the eyes of the nation will be upon the states of Iowa and New Hampshire as they kick off the presidential nominating process with their respective caucuses (Iowa, Feb. 1) and primary (New Hampshire, Feb. 9).
But is it fair that Iowa and New Hampshire wield so much power over such an important process? And does the disproportionate influence of both Iowa and New Hampshire actually erode democracy?
As we enter into this all-important election year, many Americans are questioning whether two such small, homogeneous states should essentially “pick” the leading candidates. Voters, political party members, and even candidates themselves appear increasingly frustrated with the somewhat arbitrary nominee selection process. Perhaps it’s time for a more rational system for selecting a president.
For some, a national primary seems a more reasonable and fair approach, but could a national primary actually work?
