(1) John J. Higgins & Barb Adams – When Despots Lead…
Join Barb and John as they discuss the tactics of authoritarian despots and why we should be concerned about Trump.
While Trump is a democratically-elected leader subject to the rule of the law of the land and democratic oversight, within his first two weeks of office he’s displayed several aspects (whether intentionally or not) used by authoritarian despots. (NOTE: Neither John nor I are stating that Mr. Trump is a despot.)
For consideration, here are some parallels between the tactics of authoritarian despots and some of the new administration’s moves in the first two weeks. Trump and his team are masters of blurring the lines between truth and fabrication, eroding trust in America. Despots thrive on uncertainties. Trump and his team frequently attack the media and have labeled them the “opposition party” (from a Trump tweet), undermining their credibility. Trump has also cast shadows on American elections, paving the way for his administration to “strengthen voting procedures” in their own image. Then there’s the issue of immigration. In the “name of protecting Americans,” Trump has eroded human rights–banning immigrants, refugees, and legal residents from seven Muslim countries. And he did all this while politicizing our national security–adding Steve Bannon to the National Security Council in an unprecedented move while downgrading the real military and national security expertise. National security has no room for partisan politics! Finally, Trump is doing all of these moves at such a rapid pace most Americans can’t possibly understand what’s occurring; they’re caught up in the smoke and mirrors of the daily barrage of tweets and outbursts.

(2) Michelle Deen
Joining the show during the second hour is author and marriage and family therapist, Michelle Deen. Michelle will be discussing her book, Saving America’s Grace: Rethinking Family Values, Moral Politics, and the Culture War.
How can we fix American culture and politics gone wildly off track? In her book, Saving America’s Grace, Michelle Deen presents a progressive moral framework that challenges typically held assumptions about family values, “culture wars,” and morality in politics today.
Michelle will discuss what it takes to create happy homes, healthy souls, and well-adjusted children; why a new moral focus for American politics is crucial; and how to rectify a culture gone terribly awry.
Deen tackles taboo topics–family, religion, morality, and politics–with intelligence, aplomb, and a powerful sense of purpose. Her manifesto for a better America calls for humanistic values and integrity of character, not the authoritarian values embraced by today’s Republican Party or the fundamentalist sexual mores culture warriors obsess over. Saving America’s Grace redefines what it means to be a moral society by articulating the progressive values that are the heartbeat of America. It’s a clarion call for the Left to rally together around shared moral principles and boldly move forward with clear moral conviction for a better America.
Michelle Deen is a marriage and family therapist specializing in human development and family relations. Bringing 30 years of expertise to the discussion of family values and morality in politics and culture, she finds common ground in our deeply divided political system and sparks a new conversation long overdue.
