Hour 2 – Barb Adams and John J. Higgins, What Are We Waiting For?
In his first 10 days as President, Biden has been busy signing executive orders undoing much of the damage inflicted upon this country by Trump; and he’s used the presidential podium to promote policies and priorities, most of which he’s backed up with vetted facts and statistics, a 180 from his predecessor’s fact-free rhetorical style.
But in what may be the definitive test of his presidency–whether or not he can pass a meaningful pandemic relief package and unite this country–Biden and his team are now realizing just how large of “a mess” they’ve inherited. While wanting bipartisan support for the coronavirus bill, Biden understands that if he hopes to get the relief package passed and in place, it most likely will involve his and the Democrats moving beyond the Republicans, a party divided and at war within itself.
With the impeachment trial on the immediate horizon, Republicans are now openly attacking one another over loyalty to Trump and ultimate control of the GOP’s fate—good-faith conservatives versus anti-democratic, anti-science, conspiracy theorists like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert.
For the Republican Party, it’s black and white. Either they dump Trump and Trumpism and its wild conspiracy theories or, as they seem to be doing, go all in, becoming the party of the lunatic fringe.
Even after the insurrectionist siege on January 6th at the Capitol, two-thirds of the Republicans still voted to turn over Joe Biden’s legitimate election win. Trump is their leader and they are loyal to him over party, over country, and over the will of the people. And for Republicans to say they’re just responding to public opinion among their base, who the heck do they think formulates that public opinion? They do!
Where the Republican party goes from here remains unclear, but many Republicans aren’t waiting around to find out. Since Trump’s January 6th coup attempt, tens of thousands of registered Republican voters are fleeing the GOP in a nationwide exodus, dropping their affiliation with the party.
Between Republicans leaving their party, their party leaving them, and Justice beginning to be served with more than a hundred rioters arrested in conjunction with the Capitol siege and dozens being charged, including two members of the Proud Boys charged with conspiracy, the fate of the GOP may already be determined from within.
Trump and the rest of the Republicans who support the “take it all down” attitude must be held accountable! Accountability is key for this democracy and civilization not to only function without chaos, but to continue. Our Founding Fathers had the foresight to put in Constitutional provisions to deal with the accountability crisis we’re now facing.
So I ask once again as I have before, what’s it going to take to rid ourselves of this darkness once and for all? Perhaps the answer lies in those provisions the Founding Fathers left us. But will we have the courage to use them?
