With only one month left until the election, the coronavirus delivered 2020’s October Surprise as President Trump tested positive along with First Lady Melania Trump, Hope Hicks, and a growing number of White House staff and other Republicans, jolting the 2020 campaign and a nation already reeling from this week’s disastrous debate, systemic injustice, the global pandemic, and an economic crisis.
Trump’s positive test and subsequent hospitalization now puts the national focus squarely back on his lack of leadership in failing to respond to the pandemic. Trump has become the victim of his own recklessness and disbelief in science and truth. It was only a matter of time before he and his staff fell prey to the virus as they continued to shun and mock the use of masks and social distancing, ignoring science and health experts’ advice.
With the White House now in the throes of a mini-pandemic, the American people deserve to know the truth about the president’s health and how all of this will affect the government’s ability to function.
The current scenario puts our national security at risk, as the U.S. is in a precarious state should one of our adversaries decide to spring a more conventional October Surprise. Add in the fact that this president and White House not only did nothing to protect its own staff from the coronavirus, but also refused to do what was necessary to protect U.S. citizens as well, which lays bare the fact that the U.S. is sorely unprepared to confront any and all threats.
Trump’s total irresponsibility and constant lies have put himself, his family, his staff, our government, and all of us as Americans at unnecessary risk. Now, with more than 209,000 Americans dead from the coronavirus and after Trump predicted the virus would magically disappear, repeatedly calling it a hoax and likening it to the flu or a bad cold, with his credibility fully undercut, Trump and the First Lady join the growing list of more than 7.4 million Americans infected.
While I pray for the President’s and First Lady’s full and speedy recoveries, this current October Surprise has arrived with urgency and high stakes.
We must all do our part to unite and defeat this invisible enemy by wearing masks and practicing social distancing. We must also unite to defeat Trump and all those who willfully lied about the gravity of this pandemic and who purposely spread the misinformation that has now put all Americans, this Republic, and our democracy at grave risk.
We’re one month away from a monumental election that will determine America’s and quite likely, humanity’s fate, and we’re in uncharted territory. Choose wisely!
