Today marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. During these past 20 years there have been volumes of articles and countless discussions assessing the meaning and lessons of 9/11. It’s a topic that has been debated and will continue to be debated for decades to come. The lessons drawn will change with time, just as we see 9/11 differently today than we did from a decade or two ago and just as we inevitably will see the past through the lens of the present.
Two decades ago, a badly shaken nation united in a spirit of grief, resolve, and patriotism. In 2001, the U.S. was the world’s dominant power, perhaps the most powerful ever known. And while the future for Americans at that time promised continued success, wealth and safety, 9/11 forever pierced that illusion. 9/11 was a warning of what was to come.
With 9/11 came calls for unity and for fidelity to the values of human rights and civil liberties upon which this nation was founded. With 9/11 also came temptation to stray from these principles. Today, on 9/11/21, we are dealing with the consequences of the failure to adhere to these principles…and America has forever changed.
In the spirit of creating a better future for all of us an individuals, as a nation, and as humanity, please enjoy these uplifting rebroadcasts.
