When we declared our independence from England, we also declared our freedom from the control exerted by corporations that exploited us.\u00a0 After the revolution, the Founding Fathers retained a healthy fear of corporations, limiting corporate powers to only business roles (see http:\/\/reclaimdemocracy.org\/?s=hidden+history+of+corporations).<\/a><\/p>\n

This control over corporations continued for 100 years after the revolution, with citizens governing corporations through charters and state laws and constitutions.\u00a0 Additionally, states limited corporate charters to a specific number of years.\u00a0 According to reclaimdemocracy.org, “Citizen authority clauses limited capitalization, debts, land holdings, and, sometimes, even profits.” States also imposed other conditions such as “Corporations could not make any political or charitable contributions nor spend money to influence law-making.”<\/p>\n

Fast forward to today’s America, where mega-and-multinational corporations call the shots and control your food, water, and most everything else in day-to-day life.\u00a0 Even more distressing, they now seek to purchase our legislators and governments, from the local to federal levels.<\/p>\n
