HIGGINS and BARB ADAMS on <em>&#8220;The Addiction of Power&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8778\" style=\"width: 122px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/barbadamslive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/AddictionPowerPHOTO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8778\" src=\"https:\/\/barbadamslive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/AddictionPowerPHOTO.jpg\" alt=\"Credit:  www.dreamstime.com\" width=\"122\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: www.dreamstime.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Power is sweet; it is a drug, the desire for which increases with habit.&#8221; \u2014 Bertrand Russell<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s wrong with this picture?\u00a0 Today&#8217;s corporations, many of which are multinational, pay employees far too little money for their employees to be able to afford decent healthcare or to save for retirement or unemployment (something once provided to employees).\u00a0 Meanwhile, these mega-corporations and their top officers continue to amass substantial mountains of cash.\u00a0\u00a0 Is it possible what is happening is actually an &#8220;addiction&#8221; to power and money?<\/p>\n<p class=\"bottom_entry\">Merriam-Webster defines addiction as &#8220;a strong and harmful need to regularly have something (such as a drug) or do something (such as gamble)&#8221; and &#8220;an unusually great interest in something or a need to do or have something.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Like alcoholism, where the symptoms include an increasing desire for the substance (alcohol), denial, short-term thinking, secrecy, harm to family members or others, and seeming powerlessness in the face of the addiction, it appears many of today&#8217;s corporations and their executives are addicted to power and money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bottom_entry\">Unfortunately, as a result, we all suffer for it.
