It\u2019s official, or is it?\u00a0\u00a0 During Sunday\u2019s 36th<\/sup> annual Kennedy Center Honors<\/a>, President Obama joked that he was making history when he publicly mentioned Area 51, one of the most famous secret military installations in the world.<\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s comments raised eyebrows and possibly awareness about the site, located north of Las Vegas, which many conspiracy theorists believe is a repository for extraterrestrials and crashed alien spacecraft.<\/p>\n

While the president was honoring actress Shirley MacLaine, who is known for her claims about seeing UFOs, Obama said, \u201cNow, when you first become President, one of the questions that people ask you is, what\u2019s really going on in Area 5l?\u201d\u00a0 He then continued, jokingly, \u201cWhen I wanted to know, I\u2019d call Shirley MacLaine.\u00a0 I think I just became the first president to ever publicly mention Area 51.\u00a0 How\u2019s that, Shirley?\u201d<\/p>\n

Joking aside, the almost obsessive secrecy surrounding Area 51 (aka Groom Lake) has been the stimulus for countless conspiracy theories throughout the years, especially those relating to the acquisition of extraterrestrials and alien spacecraft.\u00a0 Until recently, the site was so secret that the U.S. government refused to ever confirm its existence.\u00a0 Even former President Clinton\u2019s \u201cPresidential Determination,\u201d<\/a> which exempted the base from environmental disclosure laws, never mentioned the site by its Area 51 name, referring only to it as \u201cthe U.S. Air Force\u2019s facility in the vicinity of Groom Lake, Nevada.<\/p>\n

Area 51 didn\u2019t \u201cofficially\u201d exist until this past August, when the CIA finally released a document<\/a> confirming its use as a \u201ctesting range for the government\u2019s U-2 spy plane during the Cold War.\u201d\u00a0 Also contained within the document was the nickname officials gave to Area 51, \u201cParadise Ranch, to make it sound more attractive to potential workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

In late November of this year, more than 60 formerly released documents regarding Area 51 were \u201cdeclassified\u201d and posted <\/a>on the Internet by the National Security Archive, located at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.\u00a0 Those documents contain information<\/a> regarding the \u201cquest to develop stealthy capability in aircraft\u201d in addition to \u201c\u2026the exploitation of covertly acquired Soviet MiG fighter jets.\u201d\u00a0 None of the documents makes reference to anything \u201cunearthly,\u201d however.<\/p>\n

So with the president\u2019s public acknowledgment and the CIA\u2019s official recognition, is the controversy surrounding Area 51 finally over, or could there be more to the story?<\/p>\n

Renowned UFO researchers and authors Thomas J. Carey and Donald R. Schmitt believe there\u2019s more to the story.\u00a0 In their latest best-selling book, <\/em>\u201cInside the Real Area 51:\u00a0 The Secret History of Wright Patterson,\u201d<\/a> they provide dozens of eyewitness testimonies by highly credible, honorable and heroic military service men and women indicating that the \u201creal\u201d Area 51 is actually located in the Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (AFB) in Dayton, Ohio.<\/p>\n

According to Carey and Schmitt, the information regarding what crashed in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947 still remains classified, and only a select few have ever had access to the truth about what became known as Area 51.\u00a0 The authors researched deeper, though, and believe the trail from Roswell actually leads to Wright-Patterson AFB.\u00a0 They contend that physical evidence of extraterrestrial visitation is actually buried deep within the confines of Wright-Patterson, making it \u201cThe Real Area 51.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no shortage of stories regarding Area 51, however, especially in regards to aliens and UFOs.\u00a0 \u00a0Even the movie, \u201cIndependence Day,\u201d helped promote the idea that something \u201cout-of-this-world\u201d was going on at Groom Lake.\u00a0 But perhaps one of the more entertaining stories is presented in Christopher Antony Meade\u2019s book, \u201cThe Zombie, The Cat and Barack Obama,\u201d<\/a> in which he reveals \u201cthe real reason\u201d for all the secrecy around Area 51.\u00a0 According to Meade\u2019s novella, Area 51 is really a very secure prison for a very special type of prisoner\u2026one who can travel in time and space and is a \u201cvanishing shape shifter from the Pleiades cluster\u2026The Cheshire Cat!\u201d<\/p>\n

So whether Area 51 is a base for top-secret military design, a government repository for aliens and their spacecraft located not in Nevada, but in Ohio, or a prison for vanishing cats, the mystery surrounding Area 51 is not likely to go away any time soon.\u00a0 Maybe the question now becomes, \u201cMr. President, which Area 51 were you referring to on Sunday?\u201d<\/p>\n
