The current adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby<\/em> is playing in movie theaters across the country.\u00a0 While some may contend that the film is an indictment against capitalism, Mark Thornton believes it is “an implicit condemnation of government prohibition.”<\/p>\n

Mark believes “there is an important difference between wealth and luxury (in the modern sense) and the type of riotous over-the-top behavior on display in such films like The Great Gatsby.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Mark wrote his dissertation on the economics of prohibition, and understands the value of The Great Gatsby<\/em>, which displays decadence not merely as titillation for the viewer, but as an object lesson in the evils of prohibition.\u00a0 The entire plot is tied to the prohibition of alcohol, which was accomplished by the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, and many aspects of the plot are driven by the black market that developed in the 1920s.<\/p>\n

As Mark points out, “In the world of the black market, property rights were protected with machine guns rather than justice.\u00a0 And the stigma against young women drinking in bars at night was displaced by the allure of an exciting night out on the town drinking and listening to jazz.\u00a0 Instead of these profits going to competing entrepreneurs, the money was going into the pockets of thugs and wannabes.\u00a0 Social order was replaced by chaos.\u00a0 This cultural decay was the ironic fruit of the puritanically-motivated prohibition movement.”<\/p>\n
