But new  studies show some dark consequences related to the world\u2019s biggest  social networking site, Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian  researchers recently developed a test for networking sites, called the  Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale, which likens excessive time spent on  the site to drug and alcohol abuse. The test measures how often people  use Facebook, if they do so to forget their problems, and how using the  site negatively affects personal and working life.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5386\" src=\"https:\/\/barbadamslive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/HookedBOOKCOVER-100x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" \/>\u201cWhen  people abuse drugs and alcohol, they are trying to feel better, yet  they are worsening their situation, and we find this is also true for  those who spend an inordinate amount of time on social media sites,\u201d  says psychologist <strong>Gregory L. Jantz.<\/strong> \u201cPerhaps the hardest hit from social media addiction is the family unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Women are one of the most at-risk groups for Facebook addiction, Jantz notes, citing the Norway study.<\/p>\n<p>Not  only are children opting for computer time over time with their  parents, in an increasingly hectic society, many moms and dads are also  giving up their precious free time to Facebook rather than face time  with their kids, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnology  continues at its accelerating pace, and we are in unchartered  territory,\u201d Jantz says. \u201cIncreasingly, social networking infiltrates our  personal lives, but we need to remember that it is created to serve us,  and not the other way around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr.  Gregory L.
