{"id":4828,"date":"2012-06-07T07:02:11","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T13:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/barbadamslive.com\/?p=4828"},"modified":"2012-07-25T07:39:00","modified_gmt":"2012-07-25T13:39:00","slug":"top-stories-panetta-u-s-losing-patience-with-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barbadamslive.com\/?p=4828","title":{"rendered":"Planet Gliese 581g&#8211;First Habitable Alien World?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_5_1_22_1343136673870_256\"><strong>Planet Gliese 581g&#8211;First Habitable Alien World? <\/strong>Nearly two years after spotting <span id=\"lw_1343074385_0\">Gliese 581g<\/span>, the celebrated &#8220;first potentially habitable&#8221; alien world, the planet&#8217;s discoverers continue to fight for its existence.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_5_1_22_1343136673870_266\">The discovery of <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/10897-alien-planet-gliese-581g-great-debate.html\">Gliese 581g<\/a> made headlines around the world in September 2010, because the planet was said to orbit in the middle of its star&#8217;s &#8220;<span id=\"lw_1343074385_3\">habitable zone<\/span>&#8221; \u2014 that just-right range of distances where liquid water, and perhaps life as we know it, could exist.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study to be published August 1st, 581g&#8217;s discoverers examine  the Swiss team&#8217;s since-expanded data set and take issue with their  conclusions, saying that the evidence supports the planet&#8217;s existence  after all.<\/p>\n<p>The Gliese 581 system is a near neighbor of Earth, located just 20 light-years away.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_5_1_22_1343136673870_463\">Planet hunters are finding more and more worlds beyond our <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/56-our-solar-system-facts-formation-and-discovery.html\">solar system<\/a>.  The tally is nearing 800 by some counts, with thousands more awaiting  confirmation by follow-up observations. And while researchers have yet  to find a true alien Earth, they&#8217;re getting closer and closer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_5_1_22_1343136673870_465\">This past December, for example, NASA&#8217;s <a id=\"yui_3_5_1_22_1343136673870_467\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/15160-alien-planet-kepler-mission-2016.html\">Kepler space telescope<\/a> confirmed its first planet in the habitable zone, a &#8220;super Earth&#8221; known  as Kepler-22b that&#8217;s thought to be 2.4 times as wide as our planet.
